Coco’s Kitten Update, May 6th

May 8th, 2010

What? Six weeks since a kitten update? All is well here at Furrydance, I’m just in the midst of Spring Cleaning and sprucing up the yard now that the weather is nice!

The kittens are now 14 weeks old and have had full run of the house for about 2 weeks. If they aren’t sleeping, they are racing up and down the stairs, laying on the cat trees soaking up the sun, and still squeezing in a little nursing time, mostly for comfort now…

They passed their vet exams with flying colors and last week, three of the boys were neutered and microchipped and next week the other two will have the the same, and then they will start packing up to leave their birth home here.

They all have names now, that their new owners picked out.

Bosco is the black and white kitten.

Miles is the red tabby kitten.

Carlos and Zeus are going to the same home, how fun!

and Hiro is the black kitten that started out the runt, but caught up in size before long!

Update: Kiki has been bred and I will know if she is pregnant on May 14th, so check back for “expecting” news! We already have four families on our waiting list for our next litter, so hopefully mother nature will cooperate and Kiki will have a kitten for each of them!

Coco’s Kittens Update, March 18th

March 18th, 2010

I think everyone noticed that there was no “Kitten Mews” post last week…I even got a couple of worried emails asking if everything was ok. Oh yes, all is well…I just ran out of time! Two families came to visit the kittens and well, that entailed me cleaning house, and entertaining and educating and I was a bit bushed and thought…Oh, they will send me photos to make up for my lack of them!

Well, Rosemary and Lizzie  came over Saturday to meet me for the first time, and to see the rest of the Furrydance family and, yes…to meet the kittens! Rosemary said she had been very enamored with Love Bug in his photos, and that her husband, Rex (isn’t that a Hoot!) had mentioned he had always wanted an orange tabby cat…but they were also thinking they wanted to wait for a girl kitten, to fill Princesses glass slipper. So, this visit was really just a “Meet and Greet”…which lasted about 3 hours!

It’s hard to pull oneself away from cute kitten antics, and people often ask me how I get anything done when I have kittens around…in small bits and stops and starts, because I am always looking in on them! But they took lots of photos (most of them blurry because the kittens were racing hither and yon) but the cute pix from yesterday was one that Rosemary took. And after getting back home and showing all the family the kitten photos…as consensus was arrived at…

If Love Bug’s vet visit on Monday shows him to be in excellent health with no congenital problems such as heart, joints etc…then they want to adopt him!! I am so excited to think that soon Pierro will a kitten to “mentor” in mancatliness and someone to curl up and snuggle with…well, I am beside myself with joy! But, until they visit the vet…I am also in ignorant bliss and that is a happy place, too.

Bosco’s family-to-be live in New York City, so they have only met him in photos so far, but he will be sharing his home with Bette Blu, a young girl cat they adopted from Furrydance last year. And the two red tabby boys? Well, one of them is going to live with a family close by, who lost their Cornish Rex to liver cancer and they miss the mischievious, unique personality that a Cornish Rex can add to life! I am not sure if they will pick Cassanova or Valentino, but they will be coming back for a visit soon!

Then on Sunday, the young couple who had spoken for Cupid, the little black former runt of the litter, came back for a visit and they said “Why, there isn’t a kitten we don’t like!” Of course, it made it a bit easier for them to decide as Amore’ (now Bosco) was definitely spoken for, and the fact that I had posted some pix recently of Jacob, a handsome black Furrydance alumni…so they said they were still going with Cupid…unless Love Bug was not chosen by Pierro’s family.

So, lots of fun and anticipation growing as the kittens grow up, develop personalities and I get to meet wonderful new friends in addition to all that! They are all doing great, are eating eagerly and now weigh in at 1# 11 oz for Cupid (the smallest still, but by no means a shrinking violet) to 1# 15 oz for Love Bug (the biggest now, but just barely!). Amore’ and Valentino are 1# 12 oz and Cassanova 1#14 oz.

Coco continues to be an attentive mommie, often sitting on my bed and watching them cavort around the bedroom, hopping down to break up any “wrestling matches” that get out of hand. This week was their first time they got to have free run of the bedroom while Teri was at work…it was time! They are 7 weeks old now, using the litterbox 100% and at the stage where the bathroom wasn’t “stimulating” enough for them! Coco spends quite a bit of time out and about in the house when Teri is home, while the kittens play in their bedroom, but at night, they are all bundled in to the bathroom to sleep (and so Teri can sleep too and the rest of the cats get some “Teri Time”).

So without further chit-chat, here’s today’s photos!

Coco’s Kittens Update, March 6th

March 6th, 2010

Almost didn’t get kitten news in today! I took photos and a movie yesterday but today–had visitors (the new friend I’m going to BlogPaws with) and then we went out for an early dinner, I came home and took a two hour nap with the cats and finally cuz I know you all are waiting…a kitten update! But by the time the video uploaded…it was Sunday!!

They are all doing great and are eating up a storm and 99.9% of the time are using the litterbox…no puddles found outside the box, just a occasional poop–mostly I think they don’t quite realize when the are done and leave the box too soon–is that TMI? They are full of beans and play hard and then sleep hard, as the photos and video will show!

They had their first adventure out into the master bedroom today to show off for their visitors and of course, they kept us laughing at their antics! The family waiting for Cupid wrote me and said seeing the handsome photos of Jacob (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays photo kitty) made them fall for Cupid even harder. They are coming back for a visit next weekend and I can’t wait for them to see them again, as they saw them as newborns and wow, have they changed!

Another couple of weeks and they will have their first V.E.T. visit, and will go in to work with me and get the VIP & TLC special attention all my kitties get! But til then, they just get to play and sleep and yes, still nurse Mama Coco, who is trying her best to keep them in line and make room for them all to line up at the “milk bar” which is getting harder as they grow and oh yes, have teeth now!

Well, without further delay, here’s the latest pix to ooh and awww over, and a movie to giggle at!

Furrydance Newquay is now a Grand Champion!

February 28th, 2010

WooHoo!! AngelWaves Cattery (the cattery where Sammy, our stud cat is from) is very proud to announce their latest GRAND CHAMPION, Furrydance Newquay of AngelWaves!

Newquay (pronounced New-Key) is fondly called QTee by Mike and Trish. She is a lovely calico out of Kiki and Sammy and we all hope she is as good a momcat in the future, as her mother is.

QTee granded in CFA’s President Pam DelaBar’s ring on February 26th, 2010 in New Jersey. She was given a BEST ALLBREED CHAMPION Final! She had to beat 200 other cats (of all breeds) to earn the title of Grand Champion and I am so proud of her, and want to thank Mike for being such a loving “Dad” to her and for Trish for believing in her and keeping her out there in front of the judges.

Mike kept her in excellent show shape and she loves him and her other boyfriend kitty, Luc (the best kind of BFF, he’s neutered!). She now gets to retire from the show ring, have her heart scanned before breeding her, and we look forward to seeing her babies sometime in 2010!

Coco’s Kittens Update, February 26th

February 26th, 2010

Another week has passed, time for a kitten update, and this morning was the start of my 3 day weekend, so one of the first things I did, after giving everyone their morning treat, was to take some kitten pix!

They all continue to be healthy, happy kittens and while they still stick pretty close to their kitten box, they are starting to be adventurous and their play is becoming much more pounce and bite and there are lots of squeaks that say “Ouch! That’s too hard”…that’s how they learn what is “socially acceptable” play and it is very fun to watch!

They haven’t started eating solid food on their own yet, and there has been a couple of oops puddles outside the box, but there also have been a few clumps in the litterbox too, and a few tentative attempts to dig and cover what they did…but mostly, momma Coco is still taking care of their potty breaks. Soon as they start eating the kitten canned food, though, that will change.

When I am in their “nursery” with them, I set them in the litterbox numerous times, just so they get the scent and feel of litter and get the urge to go, hahameow! They are very vocal when they first see me and come running up to me and that is also a big change in the past week…so fun to see them grow and learn.

They just had their third nail trim and are finished with their Early Neonatal Stimulation exercises, though that is sort of how I handle them anyway, so they are still learning how nice human attention is and have yet to purr for me…just for momma Coco, when they are nursing.

They are 4 weeks old now, and starting to have distinct personalities. Valentino, the red tabby boy (with the pale undercoat, cream chin and marking around his eyes) is the leader of the pack–first out of the kitten box and first to pee in the litterbox. Right now, Love Bug, the brown tabby and white, seems to be the shy one and gets a little shivery when he’s out of the kittenbox. Cassanova plays well with everyone and is always in the midst of a kitten pile. Amore’ buddies up with Valentino in play wrestling though I am not sure who wins! Little Cupid is a tad shy too and he and Love Bug like to snuggle together while the others play sometimes.

So, without further Chit Chat, here’s the latest photos!

Coco’s Kittens Update, February 20th

February 20th, 2010

These photos show you the difference 10 days makes! Today was “moving day” for Coco and her kittens! They packed up and moved into their spacious new digs…my master bathroom. That is the next step in their growing up!
When they reach about 3 weeks of age, they start to nibble on each other, groom (lick) themselves, bobble about instead of crawl and are able to climb out of the kitten box–but not educated enough to know how to get back in!

That is when they get to move into the bathroom, with a larger, open ended kitten box and toys to play with…but mostly at this age, they play with each other! There are 2 kitten sized litterboxes in there, too, with World’s Best Litter in them so it’s safe if they nibble on it (and they do at this age).
They haven’t started using the boxes yet, but will soon as they start sampling Coco’s canned food. They often will pee in the box before they start on solid food, but til then, Coco cleans stimulates them to eliminate by licking them…but she stops that soon as they are eating something besides mama’s milk.
They continue to gain weight well and I finally can tell you for sure…Yes, they are all boys! And the two red boys, there is a difference in them too, so I am not confusing them any longer.
Cassanova is a true red tabby, as evidenced by his pale white chin and facial markings. The stripes on his legs is also more defined. Valentino is a red, and his striping is “ghost markings” and will fade as he gets older. He does not have the white on his chin and face.
It’s harder to tell the difference in the photos, but easy in person. Also, Cassanova has a bit of a wider face, too. They weight almost the same, but their body style is a little different, with Valentino being slightly more racy, if you can call a chubby kitten racy!
Well, here are the latest photos

Coco’s Kittens Update, February 10th

February 10th, 2010

I’ve been getting lots of days off work, because of all the snow that’s been falling, but I’ve been busy fixing up the large master bathroom, painting the vanity and adding new accessories, so it will be all ready for the kittens to move into in another week or so.

The kittens are doing great and growing like weeds! They have all opened their eyes now and squeek when I talk to them…I’m always pretty excited when that starts to happen! And now the really cute photos begin!

They are all extremely well, gaining weight right on target and Coco leaves them for short periods when I’m home, so she can stretch her legs and use the litterbox. She will use the one in the kitten tent, but only as a last resort. It seems to me that Coco crosses her legs and holds it til I let her out of the tent because she doesn’t want to use the one that is in her “kitten den”.

Everyone who is waiting for a kitten calls mewmie to check on them often and one new family were going to come and meet her and the kittens last weekend, but Snowpocalypse happened and no one went anywhere if they didn’t absolutely have to!

So, without further ado, here are the latest kitten pix of Coco and her “Valentines”…

Coco’s Kittens Update February 4th

February 4th, 2010

Well, a week ago, the kitten stork brought us Coco’s kittens and all is well in the nursery (my bedroom) I am happy to report!

Kittens should double their birthweight in the first week and even though Cupid had a slow start, even he is right where he should be with his weight. He was 52 grams at birth and is now 110 grams; Love Bug (the brown tabby & white) was 73 grams and now is 138 grams; Amore’, the black and white was 69 grams at birth and is now 147 grams.

And the 2 red tabby boys…well, at first I could tell them apart only because one weighed 10 grams more than the other one. Now they are the same and to me, look identical! Makes me glad I don’t breed Russian Blues or I’d be forever confused! Cassanova and Valentino weighed 71 and 80 grams when they were born, and now weigh in at 157 and 154 grams.

Mama Coco is eating well and has a smorgasbord of delights to choose from: Hill’s t/d (high in fat and calories–it’s what I feed as a treat and all the cats love it and it does help their teeth); Blue Buffalo Evolution dry; Paul Newman’s dry; and a new one I found that she likes, Freshpet Select, a gently cooked ‘homemade’ kind of food found in the refrigerator in the cat food aisle at Bloom Grocery here in Virginia (many stores stock the dog formula but they carry the cat one too, in a chicken and two fish varieties) FRESHPET SELECT and I also mix in some Pedialyte to increase the water content so she has plenty of fluids to help make milk for her babies.

I still think they are all boys, but should feel more definite about that in another week or so…and here are the latest photos, taken this morning!

Coco’s Kittens Update January 31

January 31st, 2010

Sorry for the lapse in mews about Coco and her kittens, but I was a bit anxious about the tiny black kittens chances and was pretty much focused on him (oh, and watching movies to pass the time up in the “kitten” nursery aka my bedroom). But finally Saturday, he had a day where he gained 9 grams instead of 2 to 5 grams and I think he will be fine!

Kittens should gain about 10 to 15 grams a day and when they were born, they weighed from 52 to 80 grams, with the little black one being the smallest. While everyone else was gaining the 10 grams a day, he was only gaining 5 grams and I could see the others growing before my eyes.

But I was very fortunate to have 3 1/2 days off work and made sure during the day that every 30 minutes or so, I would make sure he was nursing, even waking up in the night a couple of times to “attach” him to a nipple. He is strong and eager, and finally today he gained 21 grams in 24 hours, so I think we are over the 72 hour worry hump.

Our pet sitter’s kids always pick out nicknames for the kittens (remember Bluberrie, Blackberry, and Razzberry?). Well, these kittens were born so close to February that they picked Valentine names–Cupid, Valentino, Cassanova, Amore’ and Love Bug. Love Bug is the brown tabby and white; Amore’ the black and white, Cupid the tiny black kitten and Valentino and Cassanova the two red tabby boys. (In both photos, Love Bug is under all his brothers!)

We have kittens at Furrydance!

January 27th, 2010

Coco had her babies today, and as always, mewmie takes the mommy cats in to her day hunting place (the V.E.T.) during their last week of pregnancy, so she can keep a close eye on them.

Usually what happens is the momcats wait until about midnight to go into labor and keep mewmie up all night! But not this time.

Coco only had about 15 minutes of visible labor befor the first kitten arrived at 12:35pm, then the next one arrived at 12:50, #3 at 1:00, #4 at 1:05 and then Coco rested a bit and had the last one at 1:25pm.

Some of the staff at work had not seen kittens birthed before and they all congratulated Coco on her wonderful mothering skills and our mewmie on her wonderful midwifery skills.

Right now, mewmie thinks they are all boys…and 3 people were hoping for a girl. But just wait til they open their eyes and mew at you…who wouldn’t fall for that??

There are 2 red tabbies, 1 black, 1 brown tabby and white, and 1 black and white and mewmie hasn’t weighed them yet (she forgot to take her gram scale to work and her scale is even more accurate than the one at the V.E.T.’s) but they are all nursing and active and that makes her very, very happy!
